Medicare Open Enrollment 2025
Get Ready for Medicare Open Enrollment
Each year, Medicare gives you the chance to review and adjust your coverage. The Medicare Annual Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7, 2025. During this time, you can make changes to your plan so your coverage fits your current health needs and budget.
At Solutions to Medicare, we provide local support for Medicare Open Enrollment in North Georgia, Chattanooga, TN, and surrounding areas. We’ll sit down with you, review your current coverage, and compare new options so you’re confident going into the next plan year.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Most people are first eligible for Medicare when they turn 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period lasts for 7 months:
- 3 months before your 65th birthday
- Your birthday month
- 3 months after your birthday month
During this time, you can enroll in:
- Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
- Medicare Advantage (Part C)
- Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)
If you’re already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits, you may be enrolled in Original Medicare automatically. People with qualifying disabilities, ALS, or End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) may also qualify automatically.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
The Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) is when most people review and adjust their Medicare coverage. During this time, you can:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan
- Switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare
- Change Medicare Advantage plans
- Enroll in, change, or drop a Part D Prescription Drug Plan
Even if you’re happy with your current plan, it’s wise to review it each year—premiums, drug costs, and benefits can change.
Affordable Care Act Open Enrollment Period
From November 1 – January 15, you can:
- Enroll in a new ACA health insurance plan
- Renew your current Marketplace plan for the upcoming year
- Make changes to your existing coverage, such as switching plans or updating your information
- See if you qualify for subsidies or tax credits to lower your monthly premiums
If you want your coverage to begin on January 1, you must enroll or make changes by December 15. Enrollments made between December 16 – January 15 will start on February 1.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
From January 1 – March 31, if you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can:
- Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan
- Return to Original Medicare (with or without adding a Part D plan)
Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)
Special Enrollment Periods are available for people under certain circumstances. For example, if you or your spouse are still working and have employer or union health coverage, you may delay Medicare without penalty.
Once that coverage ends, you’ll have:
- 8 months to enroll in Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
- 63 days to enroll in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Prescription Drug (Part D) plan
Why Enrollment Timing Matters
Missing deadlines or choosing the wrong enrollment window can result in:
- Late enrollment penalties
- Gaps in coverage
- Limited plan choices
That’s why it’s so important to have a trusted guide to help you enroll at the right time.
